Furniture care
Take good care of your furniture and it will repay you with years of service and pleasure. Fortunately all it requires is a little elbow grease! Here are 'House of Oak's' simple tips to ensure your furniture is always looking at its best.
Furniture should be moved out of the direct sunlight. If the damage is very severe the only remedy is stripping and refinishing. If you cannot avoid leaving some items of furniture in direct sunlight you can purchase clear window films that provide up to 99.9% protection against harmful UV rays.
Furniture exposed to high humidity levels for prolonged periods may experience mould growth and insect infestation. Avoid placing furniture in attics, basements or any area in the home that may experience extreme temperature changes.
Apply furniture wax on a regular basis. It not only protects furniture but also adds depth to the wood and gives it a healthier look. Whilst it isn't a complete protection, it does provide a protective barrier when against spills and other damage. Regular applications of wax polish will protect the finish on your furniture indefinitely.
How to apply paste wax
Furniture wax is easy to apply. Here's how to do it:
- First, wipe the surface clean with a slightly damp cloth.
- With a soft, clean, lint free cloth, apply the furniture paste wax by dipping the cloth into the can of wax.
- Apply the wax sparingly, rubbing it vigorously in a circular motion over the wood surface.
- Buff the paste wax as you would if polishing a car. Buffing lightly will produce a satin sheen; while more buffing can produce a higher sheen or even a gloss.
- If the surface appears to have shiny and dull areas simply apply another coat of paste wax.
Maintaining your waxed surface is easy; simply dust it with a soft cloth. If the surface becomes dirty, a damp cloth may be helpful in removing the dirt. If that does not work, try a fresh coat of paste wax.
How Often Should You Apply Paste Wax?
It depends on how often the surface is used and cleaned. Every time a waxed surface is "wiped" it removes some of the wax. Eventually there is no longer enough wax on the surface to buff to a shine. This is when a fresh coat of wax should be applied.
